The PGA Tour and the FedEx Cup.

The PGA Tour's season-long race is the FedEx Cup. Scottie Scheffler won it for the second time in August 2026. The FedEx Cup Fall, which decides cards for 2027, was still in progress on 20 October 2026.

Where the Tour came from

Touring professionals broke away from the PGA of America to form the Tournament Players Division. Wikipedia dates the split to late 1968; The Golf News Net says 1969. Joe Dey, a former USGA executive director, became its first commissioner. The Golf News Net says the division was renamed the PGA Tour in 1974, when Deane Beman became the second commissioner and moved the headquarters to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Wikipedia gives 1975 for the renaming instead.

The 2026 season

PGA Tour's 2026 schedule had 35 official FedEx Cup events. The regular season began with the Sony Open in Hawaii (12 to 18 January 2026) and the FedEx Cup ended at the Tour Championship in Atlanta (24 to 30 August 2026).

Signature Events

Eight regular-season events carried Signature status in 2026: the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, the Miami Championship, the Truist Championship, the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship. Their fields are the top 50 from the previous season's FedEx Cup plus players who qualify during the season through the Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5.

2026 was the 20th edition of the Playoffs. The Tour Championship format also changed. In 2024 Scheffler won under the "starting strokes" system, in which the top seed began the week with a head start. In 2026 the title went to whoever had the lowest actual 72-hole score, PGA Tour reported.

Keeping a card

From 2026, the top 100 in the final FedEx Cup standings, counted after the Fall events, are fully exempt for the following season, down from 125. Players finishing 101st to 125th receive conditional status.

2026: Scheffler at East Lake

The final round was played on 30 August 2026. Scheffler started it three shots behind, shot 66 and finished three ahead of Hovland, with Ryan Gerard third. ESPN and others counted it as his 22nd PGA Tour win (search summary). PGA Tour noted that four players won three times each in the 2026 season: Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark, with two of Scheffler's wins coming in the last three weeks of the Playoffs.

2026 Players Championship

Cameron Young won the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass (12 to 15 March 2026) at 13 under, 275, one ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick, with Xander Schauffele third. Rory McIlroy, the 2025 champion, did not defend. These details come from search summaries of The Golf News Net and the ESPN leaderboard.

A CBS Sports search summary says the Biltmore Championship Asheville and the Good Good Championship replaced the Procore Championship and the Sanderson Farms Championship in the Fall. Results of the Fall events played so far were not part of our research.
