How LIV began
The first LIV Golf Invitational was a 54-hole event at the Centurion Club in St Albans, near London. It ended on 11 June 2022 with a one-shot win for Charl Schwartzel of South Africa. AP described it as the first of eight events in LIV's first year, and reported that the PGA Tour had banned the players who signed up.
On 6 June 2023 the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV, announced what they called a "framework agreement", according to Sports Illustrated. How that agreement developed afterwards was not part of our research.
How LIV events work
- 72 holes from 2026. LIV moved from 54-hole to 72-hole events for the 2026 season, a change announced in early November 2025. The Golf News Net reported that the 54-hole format had stood in the way of LIV players receiving Official World Golf Ranking points.
- No cut. Every player plays all four rounds, according to The Golf News Net's 2026 event previews.
- Two competitions at once. Players compete as individuals and in four-player teams. Thirteen teams contested the 2026 finale, Sports Illustrated reported.

The 2024 individual title is from Sports Illustrated's report of 16 September 2024: Rahm clinched it by winning LIV Golf Chicago.
2025
Rahm won the season-long Individual Championship at LIV Golf Indianapolis, overtaking Joaquin Niemann, while Sebastian Munoz won that event in a playoff (Fox Sports). At the Team Championship at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Michigan, Legion XIII (Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin and Caleb Surratt) beat Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC on the second playoff hole, according to a search summary.
2026: a shortened finish
The 2026 season is complete, but it did not end as planned. Sports Illustrated reported on 17 August 2026 that the Michigan team finale, scheduled for 27 to 30 August, had been cancelled. LIV Golf Indianapolis, a 57-player, four-day stroke-play event at The Club at Chatham Hills from 20 to 23 August 2026, decided both titles instead, in Sports Illustrated's account.
- Individual: Rahm won his third straight Individual Championship. LIV Golf's own report says he had already clinched it, and a search summary of a Daily Tribune report (19 August 2026) says he clinched it after LIV Golf New York, before Indianapolis was played.
- Team: Legion XIII (Rahm, Hatton, Surratt and McKibbin) repeated as team champions, finishing six strokes ahead of HyFlyers GC at Indianapolis.
- The Indianapolis event itself: LIV's own report says Michael La Sasso of HyFlyers won at 18 under, one ahead of Rahm. We found no second source to confirm it.
Sources differ
Sports Illustrated (17 August 2026) says the Indianapolis event decided both the individual and the team titles. LIV Golf and the Daily Tribune summary say Rahm had already secured the individual title before then. Both agree that Rahm won it; we have not settled when it was decided.
2027: undecided
In the same 17 August 2026 report, LIV chief executive Scott O'Neil said the league was being reimagined as one owned by its players, and that a deal with a lead investor he did not name could lead to a 2027 season. As of that report, the latest in our research, no 2027 season had been confirmed.
LIV's 2026 events were shown in the United States by Fox Sports; see watching golf. For the other men's tours, see the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.
